The Meeting: Yaoi from the low lands

The Meeting is a BL doujinshi by Dutch author and artist Coco Ouwerkerk and one of my personal favorites. It tells the story of a merman and a faun who fall in love and the hijinks that ensue.

The Meeting (and its included second chapter, Under The Sea) is a silent comic, meaning that everything in this comic is conveyed through visuals alone. This was a clever move, because now everyone can enjoy the comic to its fullest extent, regardless of a potential language barrier. This style of comic can be very difficult to pull off, but because these are small stories, with very little need for exposition, it works out perfectly.

The style in which the comic was drawn is very cute and inviting, despite the fact of it being (like most doujinshi) completely black and white. The full-color cover of the book gives you enough to know whether or not you want to read it.

My only nitpick about the art in this book is that the illustrations in the second part, Under The Sea, look more rushed than the illustrations for part one; part one being fully inked and ‘colored’ with watercolors and part two being done entirely in pencils, where you can still see the sketches underneath.

However, that doesn’t take away how dynamic and expressive the characters are. Under The Sea tells a bigger, more exciting story than The Meeting as well, requiring more illustrations per page, which makes it all the more easy to forgive.

The Meeting and Under The Sea are stories of unconditional love (at first sight) that are worthy of praise, which is why I’m awarding this comic with an 8/10!
